U16 Men Group B
Germany pulled away from Montenegro to secure their second win in Group B of the U16 European Championship Men.
Germany went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter to take a 23-12 lead at the end of the period. The lead stayed at around 10 points for most of the game, before a 10-0 Montenegro run at the start of the fourth quarter.
Petar Saric then hit a three-pointer to give Montenegro the lead at 54-53, but Germany scored the final 18 points of the game to pull away for victory.
"They played with a lot of heart - we knew they would," said German coach Harald Stein. "It was similar to the Russia game. Again, we were losing with five minutes remaining but we finished well. Their interior defense was tough, but we kept attacking the basket and it worked."
Niklas Ney led the German team with 14 points on 6-8 shooting, while David Taylor contributed 12 points and 5 assists.
Luka Djurovic was the game high-scorer with 29 points as well as 4 steals. But the German team was able to restrict the Montenegro team to 30% shooting overall, with big men Jan Wimberg and Daniel Mayr blocking shots in the paint.
"We want to improve in every game - players, coaches, everybody", said coach Stein. "Tonight we'll rest, then we'll review this game, maybe look at the video, and prepare for tomorrow's game with Serbia. We are looking forward to it, we've had a good start."
