U16 Men Group B
|Viacheslav Fedorchenko was red hot, sparking Russia with 33 points|
Russia came back superbly to knock off Serbia and record their first victory of the U16 European Championship Men in Hradec Kralove.
Viacheslav Fedorchenko was an inspiration for the Russian team, with 33 points on 13-22 shooting.
"It didn't happen for Fedorchenko yesterday, but today he was in a better mood, he felt better prepared and we saw the results." stated Russian coach Alexey Zhukov.
Russian captain Vasily Martynov also recorded 17 points and three steals, while Pavel Sizov got 10 points, 8 rebounds and a huge block at the end of the game to secure the victory.
Serbia received 26 points and 5 assists from captain Nikola Rebic, and 17 points from Branko Djukanovic. But in the second half, the Serbian team couldn't cope with Russia's energy on defense.
Serbia jumped out to an early advantage, looking strong inside behind big men Dusan Ristic and Doko Salic. Coach Zhukov wasn't worried though: "They had a size advantage, but we had a speed advantage that I thought we could use later in the game."
Djukanovic's three-pointer at the end of the first quarter made the score 24-13, but Russia pulled back in the second quarter and Alexander Gankevich's big offensive rebound and put-back brought the score to 44-40 at half-time, Serbia leading by 4.
The game really turned at the end of the third quarter, as the Russian team took a five-point deficit and turned it into a ten-point lead inside five minutes, with Fedorchenko particularly active.
His steal and lay-up put Russia ahead 86-74 and though Serbia tried to pressure Russia through fouls, the Russian team showed no nerves from the line to secure a deserved victory.
